Friday Five

August 10th 2007

1. You’ve always wished for it, and your wish has come true: There’s now a twenty-fifth hour in the day, but you have to spend it the same way every day on something you don’t have enough time for now, and it can’t be for sleep. How will you spend this extra hour every day?
Honestly, I can’t think of anything now because since I don’t have a job, I have plenty of time. Maybe once school starts up and I actually have things to do I’ll be able to answer that.

2. As if that weren’t enough, an extra day has been added to the calendar, and you can insert it anywhere you want, except the day immediately before or after a holiday, and you have to spend it the same way every year. How will you spend this extra day each year, and when on the calendar will it appear?
An extra day at the end of February so it has more days like the rest of the months. So on leap year, February will have the normal 30 days…

3. Someone is giving you an extra twenty dollars per week (or its equivalent, if your country uses a different monetary unit) to spend any way you want, but you have to spend it the same way every week, and it has to be on yourself (no charity or gift-giving, and no investing or saving!). How will you spend this extra twenty dollars per week?
Candy, hands down.

4. Wow! When you woke up this morning, you noticed that someone snuck in and added a new room to your living space! The room is for your exclusive use, and it can serve only one FUN function (and it can’t be used as a bedroom or storage). What fun activity will be reserved for this new room?
Ping pong table, perhaps. Or a trampoline.

5. A magic backpack appears at your doorstep. It will hold any one thing you can normally carry by yourself, it will render that item weightless, and it will collapse to the size of a small pack of gum. What will you carry in it?
Copper

Thank you Friday Five

All Fixed Up

August 10th 2007

So we moved into the new apartment. It’s 700 square feet, with one bedroom. It’s actually quite spacious. The rent is a little high, but it pays to be in a good complex. Copper even has a little patio off our bedroom that has some grass for him. The grass is high because it hasn’t been mowed since we moved in last week and he loves it. The kitchen is pretty small and so is the bathroom, but it doesn’t even matter to me because it’s ours.

My dad is coming back down this weekend to bring us some armchairs, a few lamps and a wireless router. I don’t like being stuck in this one area with my laptop.

As for this site, I’m going to try to add some more content and post more now that we’re all settled. Maybe an updated layout.

Getting ready for orientation

July 18th 2007

We’re leaving for orientation today. Tonight we’re gonna go see a Hooks game, they’re the minor league baseball team in Corpus. And then tomorrow the apartment search begins. I’ve already looked through rent.com and other apartment listings and have been comparing them. We’re going to go see the ones that I think will be our best bet.

The actual orientation is going to be exciting, but boring, I’m sure. A lot of sitting around listening to people talk. It’s just like the first day of school, way back when. It was exciting because you’re starting something new, but all the teachers go over rules the first day. You hear “You can only go to the bathroom when you get permission!” seven different times.

We’re leaving Copper with one of my friends and I have to say, I’m gonna miss him. He’s like our kid. I don’t like leaving him for four days. I’m worried since he’s such a baby. He whines for everything and he’s such a mama’s boy. He even sleeps with us. I know it’s not ideal for a dog to be that spoiled, but since he’s a puppy, I’m allowing it. I don’t mind it though, even when he’s big. My dogs have always slept with me. And now we have a bigger bed so there’s more room.

With college comes complication

July 4th 2007

Since I’m starting college in the fall, I have to find money to pay for all my expenses, tuition, rent, etc. I got a $2000 academic scholarship and then a $2000 grant for the first year, which is great. But then I have to take out loans for the rest. I qualify for the government loans and the school’s financial aid office has helped with that, but we’ve had to jump through all kinds of hoops and it’s still not quite over yet. First, we had to submit my FAFSA. It asked so many detailed questions about money, it was worse than filing a tax return, I kid you not. Then I didn’t put something right on it so I had to go back, correct and resubmit it, thus waiting even longer. So then we were “awarded” the loan packages. I had to accept them, and then go fill out separate applications with the government and then fill out identical forms with the lending institution. And there’s still things I’m leaving out that my mom did. I had no idea how complicated going to college was. It doesn’t seem so bad now that it’s mostly over, but it seemed super difficult during the process.

I also have to find an apartment, which is a task all on its own. I’ve been looking at rent.com and found some good places that let us have Copper. I called around and found out how much rent/utilities and everything is at the different places. Now I’m ready to go look at them in a couple weeks and make a final decision. That is something I’m looking forward to. I can’t wait to move out. Mom also bought us a new mattress. It’s a queen size, which is nice. That reminds me I need to look around and see if anyone has a cheap wooden bed for sale so we don’t just have the metal frame. I’m glad to finally get out of this double bed that is awful. It was a cheap mattress when it was new and now it’s a few years old so it’s worse. When Don sits on it, I roll toward him, which is kind of funny, but not the best way to sleep.

Jem gave me back my old QBee number 43. XD I had that number with my old personal site for a long time. Which reminds me my quilt layout is a little off on some of the pages and I’m not sure why…I need to fix that.

Copper

June 26th 2007

Last week Don and I got a dog. His name is Copper. He is a purebred AKC registered beagle. He turned six weeks old Friday. He used to do a whole lot of sleeping, but he’s getting to be a lot more playful now. He doesn’t sleep the entire night, but wakes up about four, having to go to the bathroom. He’s still in the chew-on-everything phase and I hope he’s one of those dogs that grows out of that. We’re working on potty training right now. He’s registered on Dogster also. I’m not very familiar with that site so we haven’t done much to his page. I’ll get around to that later.
