An injury and a new job

April 30th 2007

Don’s ankles have been hurting him for about three months now. We originally thought it was his boots that he has to wear to work. The other day he finally went to the doctor and apparently two bones in each foot are semi-fused together and when he dropped a deer blind on his feet back in January, it caused inflammation. So he got a steroid shot in his left one and he’s getting one in his right on Wednesday. This semi-fused bone thing is more common than you’d think. The doctor told us that a lot of people have it and never know. Most people don’t drop five hundred pound deer blinds on their feet either.

I’m starting my new job today. It’s tech support for an ISP. I’m excited. Finally a job with computers. Training is all this week, from five to ten. We get to pick our schedules so I can work as much or as little as I want. I don’t have to put in notice two weeks in advance just to find out the time I needed off wasn’t given to me (like my dad’s wedding, something important that I had to go to, not the dodgeball tournament that half the store took off for).

Illustrator

April 24th 2007

I’m experimenting with the pen tool in Illustrator. I’ve never used that one before because it’s quite confusing for someone new to the program. I finally got the hang of it with the help of a tutorial from Veerle. There’s a video of her using it and I’ve been practicing for the past two days. I’m getting much better. Right now I’m working on the mushrooms from Fantasia. So far there’s three of them and I like the second one the best. I still have some finishing touches for the third. I wish I had more creativity right now to draw on my own, but unfortunately, I don’t.

Post Categories?

April 18th 2007

Don and I are barbecuing today. We’ve had leftover dove in the freezer and decided to finally make poppers with them. We shishkabobbed them with bacon and cheese. They were delicious. We also cooked some Johnsonville brats, but didn’t even getting around to eating those. There will be plenty of leftovers.

Do you know what I realized? I have no post categories. I have all posts just in the “Everything” category and that’s it. When I first started this blog, I didn’t really care about making sure posts went into the right place. Maybe I should do that sometime…

I’ve also been playing around in Illustrator a little bit. I want to get more familiar with it and actually start drawing more. I have some old pieces I did, mostly just copies of characters that are already out there (Hello Kitty, Bugs Bunny, etc.) because I was just learning. And I am not creative enough to make up my own. They never turn out very well. The ducks in this layout actually turned out very nice, considering I just started drawing.

A project that I’ve added to my list is to compile a big list of different resources and websites. I have tons of bookmarks that are sort of separated into different types and I want to get them more organized and have an easier way to view them. I’ve been looking at link directories, but I haven’t come across any I like. I want it to be very very simple.

There’s only a month left of school. Then I graduate. I can’t believe it. I remember my first day of freshmen year. And now I’m almost done. I’m so excited.

Fite Nite

April 13th 2007

Well, I fixed my layout in IE. It seems that the header was causing something. After a little trial and error, the site looks good in all browsers. Next I’m working on my sidebar. For different sections of the site, I want the subpages linked in the sidebar. I know it can be done, but I haven’t had a chance to sit down and completely figure it out. I’m about half way there.

Last night I went to Fite Nite sponsored by the Kappa Sig fraternity at the local college. It’s their 47th annual Fite Nite and they have people, mostly students, who box each other. It was pretty fun. Some good fights, some bad ones. A few knock outs. Then me and my mom were going to go see my cousin’s band, Nothing More, but they were over by the time we got there. They’re pretty good actually. Then Don and I went to Wal-Mart because we were bored and didn’t want to go home. So we bought season one of House MD, one of our new favorite shows, and some other stuff. I got some great scrapbooking things on sale.

Sunday is my dad’s wedding. I’m excited to see my family that lives in Colorado that are coming. My dad’s two sisters and they’re kids. I haven’t seen them in two or three years. There’s one that I haven’t even met, she’s about two.

Morons

April 10th 2007

So this guy emailed me a few days ago asking to link exchange. I’m a semi-nice person so I checked out his site and besides it being a monstrosity of a design, his content wasn’t very good either. It’s not just pointless, but offensive. But don’t worry, he has a disclaimer on it saying “If you don’t like, go fuck yourself,” which I could agree with. I do agree with it actually. It’s his site, he can do what he wants with it. But since this is my site, I can do whatever I want with it, right? Well, I don’t want to link to someone like that.

Another sin he committed in my book is that he direct-linked. On purpose. He wasn’t just ignorant. There was a little disclaimer as he called it, “i will usually direct link your button until you add me, once you add me i will save your button to my server.” So he knows that most people don’t like that. And yet he does it. For what? I don’t know. But that’s the reason I gave him for turning down his link exchange.

So he emails me back, not once, but twice. Calling me names, insulting me, and saying he’s a real designer and I’m an idiot. And do you know what the worst part of this whole thing is? He’s 21. He claims his website has been around since 1999. You’d think he’d have learned a little something about the web since then.

P.S. Someone help me figure out why the hell my layouts never work in IE. I almost don’t even want to fix it since my stats show the top five browsers are different versions of Firefox.
